About African Whitewood (Obeche)
Triplochiton scleroxylon (Scientific Name), also known as Obeche or Whitewood, is a hardwood species that primarily grows in the tropical forests of West Africa. It is a soft and light hardwood that is used for interior works including veneering, furniture, mouldings and picture frames. The trees are about 65-100 ft (20-30 m) tall and have a 3-5 ft (1-1.5 m) trunk diameter. The wood has a low average dried weight of 24 lbs/ft3 (380 kg/m3) and a low Janka rating of 430 lbf (1,910 N). It is not hard or heavy.
Description
African Whitewood typically has sapwood that can be difficult to distinguish from the heartwood because both tend to be a pale yellow colour. Age causes colours to slowly darken. The interlocked grain has a medium to coarse texture, and a nice natural lustre. The wood is considered non-durable, has low insect resistance, and, if not dried quickly, can become susceptible to fungus stains and discolouration. Although the interlocking grain can result in certain rough surfaces during some machining operations, it is otherwise simple to work with. IO carve, stain, glue, and finish. Although it is usually sold as veneer or plywood, lumber is occasionally available.
Uses of Obeche
Despite being very soft and light in weight, Ayous timber is fairly stable and has a good strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it suitable for many applications. Obeche is reasonably priced for an imported hardwood. Veneer, carvings, furniture, plywood, and interior millwork are some of the most frequent uses.
