About European Beech Wood

It is a popular hardwood species that is used for a variety of purposes, including furniture, construction, and interior joinery. Also called common beech because of its extensive popularity and use, It primarily grows in Europe. It is a hard, heavy and strong wood, but it is not durable in terms of resistance to insect and borer attacks. The wood has a nice pale yellow-brownish colour, which may sometimes have a pink hue. Making veneer out of it requires the wood to undergo steam treatment, which usually leaves it darker coloured or with a more golden tone, which is one of the most popular things about it.

Description

European Beech Wood, also called common beech, is primarily sourced from Europe. It grows in many parts of Europe and is exported to other parts of the world. It has the scientific name called Fagus sylvatica. The trees are about 30-40 m tall and have a 1-1.5 m trunk diameter. The average dried weight is 710 kg/m3 and it has a Janka rating of 1,450 lbf (6,460 N), which indicates that the wood is both strong and hard. It is a non-durable and almost perishable wood and not at all suitable for outdoor uses.

It has a pale straw-coloured heartwood and the sapwood is almost white to yellowish and not clearly distinguishable from the heartwood. The presence of a minute ray fleck pattern in quartersawn surfaces is common. The wood colour will turn darker reddish-brown due to exposure and the stream treatment for bending may further cause a darker reddish-golden hue. The wood grain is generally straight and the texture is fine to medium. European Beech is considered non-durable, is perishable and has poor resistance to insect and borer attacks, which makes it not so suitable for outdoor applications. It belongs to the Fagaceae family of trees. It dries rapidly with both air drying and kiln drying methods, but it may be prone to warp, twist, split, and shrink.

Uses

European Beech is easy to work with machine tools. It glues, bends (steam-bending), and finishes well. It is widely grown and easily available throughout Europe and the price is very economic for locally-grown wood. Uses include plywood, flooring, lumber, boatbuilding, veneer, cabinetry, turned objects, furniture, and musical instruments.
